MTNL launches 3G services in Mumbai
By narendra • May 16th, 2009 • Category: Business, Technology NewsMumbai, May 15, State-run telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) Friday launched third generation (3G) mobile services in Mumbai at an investment of Rs.250 crore.
“Our total investment for the 3G launch in Mumbai is Rs.250 crore and we hope to rope in 100,000 customers by March next year. Connections will be available in about a month’s time,” MTNL chairman and managing director R.S.P. Sinha said.
MTNL has built up the capacity to provide service to 750,000 subscribers, but due to unavailability of the required spectrum, only 400,000 customers could be served.
“We will launch the service in south and central Mumbai currently. This will soon be expanded to other parts of the city, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan and Dombivli,” Sinha said.
The 3G service would enable customers to make video calls, view live TV shows on their mobiles, download data from internet at high speed among many other applications, he added.
MTNL has partnered with mobile phone maker Nokia, which would provide 3G handsets with connection packages.
