By ians • Apr 30th, 2009 • Category: Nation IndiaNew Delhi, April 29, The parents and friends of 17-year-old Akkriti, who died after an asthma attack in her Modern School Vasant Vihar last week, Wednesday staged a protest outside the school demanding principal Goldy Malhotra’s resignation.
Around 15 people staged a protest for a while and lighted candles at the gates of the school in the afternoon. They shouted slogans like “We want justice”, “Goldy must resign”.
“We don’t trust the inquiry set up by the school management. We want justice for my daughter and principal Goldy Malhotra must resign,” said Bina Bhatia, Akkriti’s mother.
Akkriti, a Class 12 student, had suffered an asthma attack during school hours last week and died while she was being taken to hospital. Her parents hold school authorities responsible for her death, saying they had delayed shifting Akkriti to hospital.
The school management Monday instituted an internal inquiry committee.
Eminent journalist B.G. Varghese has been named the chairman of the internal inquiry committee and its members include B.K. Rao, chairman of the medical council of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Subhash Arya, head of the department of paediatrics adolescent medicine of the B.L. Kapur Hospital, and advocate Anuradha Dutt.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police Wednesday set up a parallel investigation team under the supervision of additional deputy commissioner Rishipal. However, police were yet to register a case in the incident.
The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Delhi government’s education department are also separately conducting inquiries into the matter.
