Baby born in camp set up for Bengal anti-Maoist operations
By ians • Jun 30th, 2009 • Category: Nation IndiaLalgarh (West Bengal), June 30, It was the middle of the night when she first entered this world at a temporary camp set up in West Midnapore’s Lalgarh region to house villagers while security forces took on the Maoists.
According to sources, her mother, Parbati Kisku, named her daughter Ratri (which means night in Bengali) as she was born last Thursday amid multiple obstacles. Kisku was virtually driven out of her small thatched house in Lalgarh and took shelter at the camp.
“The newborn is now in good health. We are all taking care of the baby and her mother,” said another villager who was also staying at the camp for the past few days during the security forces’ operation in Lalgarh, about 200 km from Kolkata.
“I enquired about the status of everyone staying at the relief camp and I came to know she is well,” Deputy Inspector General of state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) S.N. Gupta told IANS.
“Now I’ve to look into whether there’s any medical officer present at the camp,” he said.
Lalgarh has been on the boil since November when a land mine exploded on Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s convoy route.
Angry tribals, backed by Maoists, complained of police atrocities after the blast and launched an agitation, virtually cutting off the area from the rest of West Midnapore district.
Maoists are active in areas under 21 police stations in the state’s three western districts – West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
