Connect science, policy for progress on climate change: Pachauri

New York, July 21, The chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Monday said there remained a “glaring gap” between the policy and science on climate change.

“We need to connect science and policy,” Rajendra Pachauri said at a news conference organised by the United Nations Environment Programme.

The IPCC shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 with former US vice president Al Gore.

Pachauri called for a successful completion of negotiations in Copenhagen this December for a new agreement on capping carbon emissions. At the final talks from Dec 7-18, government leaders have been asked to cut a deal on greenhouse gas emissions to combat global warming.

He said there will always be doubters about a new agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which will expire in 2012.

IPCC met in Venice last week to review scientific advancements as well as its fifth climate change assessment report, which will be released in 2014. The panel issued its fourth report last year, in which it blamed human behaviour for contributing to global warming.
