G8 supports Pakistan’s fight against terror
By Jaideep Sarin • Jul 9th, 2009 • Category: WorldL’Aquila (Italy), July 9, Pakistan has got the support from the G8, the group of world’s eight most wealthy and industrialised countries, for its fight against terrorism.
“The G8 stands with Pakistan in its fight against terrorists and violent extremists,” a statement by the G8 said.
Pakistan is engaged in tackling armed terrorists of the Taliban and Al Qaeda network inside its territory, particularly the Swat valley in northwestern part of the country.
While asking Pakistan to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold human rights and combat corruption, the G8 said it would engage with various international agencies to provide relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction to civilian population affected by the fight against terrorists.
On Afghanistan, the G8 hoped that credible and secure elections are held in the strife-ridden country next month. It added that the G8 stood ready to assist the new government in Afghanistan.
